Next Step Labs - My Next Step

I find it ironic that I haven't taken my own advice.. For the past year I have been advising entrepreneurs and small to medium businesses in the fine art of customer development. Have an idea, prototype or question, get it out there and give interested people the opportunity to engage. Build-Measure-Learn then Iterate.
About Me
I turn dreamers into doers and help develop ideas into successful products or prototypes. My specialty, I help people get unstuck and determine optimized Next Steps towards their goals with a focus on customer and product development, building rapid prototypes, coaching and playing devil's advocate or QA etc etc. I have 13 years of experience running startup and advanced development groups that did just that (as a manager/individual contributor). Then I sailed around the world for Six Years and built a support community with utilties to share/discover content through social media.

I've be mentoring entrepreneurs at Cambridge Innovation Center (CIC) C3 / Anything Goes Lab in Kendall Square and the energy and passion is amazing. In Boston/Cambridge we have a collection of some of the smartest people in the world but we often rely on fate to connect and I want to change that.
My Intention
I want to help bridge the gap between face-to-face interaction/learning/passion and the web. My rapid prototype is the Unconference Virtual Session setup..
Capture the passion and energy from MassTLC Innovation Unconference, feed it, grow it and keep it alive and we WILL change the world!! (more detailed intentions here).
It is designed to crowd source the contributions/knowledge and curate "Virtual Sessions" to develop an online UnConference that parallels the physical one. Instead of having all the Session content scattered throughout the webosphere, we will be gathering the content back into virtual online sessions.  These focused virtual sessions will be used to curate key takeaways and content so participants, and those unable to attend, can continue the valuable discussions, shared knowledge and energy long after the physical unconference is over

Discussion Overview
Update: see a curated virtual session on 42 Ways to Generate Buzz by Scott Kirsner or what it was like to drive the Ferrari.
Note: Session information is available through the Virtual Wall (clicking on Official Blog opens a virtual session)
Last Friday this was just an idea and by Tuesday we had a working connected prototype (details to follow). All developed in a long weekend? .. actually it was a little less because I spent days with my wife and son and mostly built it while they slept.
What's Next Step Labs?
I want to continue the energy from the unconference and build on the community that forms around our passions. I've been working with Tim Rowe (CIC) and Carrie Stalder (Venture Cafe) to allocate physical space for organized discussions near the Cafe.
Mostly it will start as hands on Get Unstuck working sessions. Have a problem, need help?.. we'll get you moving again. It's free, so we'll even offer a money back guarantee that it will work. Our goal is to leverage the Unconference prototype (rev 2) to curate the knowledge and stories so a larger virtual community can leverage our efforts and stay connected/find help.
Ideas
  • Crowd Sourced Help/Next Steps
  • Resource Pool (peer to peer etc)
  • Help Needed/Help Offered connector
  • Cross-Pollination (biz to developer, entrepreneur to community etc)
  • Consulting Group (smart guns for hire )
I've actually got more a lot more detailed thoughts but Bill Warner is calling about last minute tweaks. More thoughts coming soon!
Interested?
Let's start the discussion here or you connect with me at the unconference or Venture Cafe. I also schedule meetings/brainstorming sessions during the days I'm in town.
Ideas? Suggestions? Let them fly
Update: Bill just refered to the Virtual Organizer as the Mega-System.
